Episode 7 is about carrying the essentials, liquids and calories, maybe your cell phone, jacket, salt pills, a camera, gloves, small dog... you get the idea.  We take a look at the ways to take your goods on the go, from the basic hand held to the the full on hydration vest.  Lastly we wrap up with a look at the very functional Inov-8 Race Pro 4 waist pack with the H2Orizontal system.

Great podcast. A great overview of the different options out there. I think you may have convinced me to try something new. :)

I enjoyed the podcast!  Nice to see the options in person though it convinces me that I'm probably better off with my Nathan 4 bottle waist belt (10oz bottles). Just my preference since I'm small and don't want to carry much. Answer to your QOTD:  Between my Nathan and my Race Ready LD shorts pockets, I carry several gels, motrin, s! caps, 1 pk of enlyten, keys, and a sm plastic bag w/cash.  I also have room for Clif Bloks and a phone when necessary.  It's not much but the ultras I've been in have been well supported.

Nice review; I have a Wasp vest for those long runs but because I drink Pepetuem which is not recommended for bladders so I fill it with water and top up my bottles when needed. I have two handhelds as well. For shorter runs I have a Nathan race vest for fuel only. As for the contents, the usual: gel bottle, blisterkit, basic first aid kit, bottle of Ensure, camera, extra clothing if needed, sun cream, insect repellent, Endurolytes, maybe a cellphone and extra drink powder...phew no wonder it's so bloody heavy!

Another great review podcast! Where was this podcast when started running ultras a year ago? I could have used it!

Coming from a big-city marathon running background. I was used to carrying nothing, knowing I had aid stations every 2 miles. I showed up to my 1st ultra, a 50k trail run with 8-9k of vertical and aid 7-10 miles apart carrying no liquid. Just a map and my cell phone in my pocket. Needless to say, I cramped up pretty bad.

My 1st purchase after that race was an Ultimate Direction 2 bottle waist pack, I have since then picked up the Nathon 1 bottle quick draw waist pack. I also have a small backpack with a 100 oz hydration bladder for some longer distance speed hiking.

That inov-8 waist pack looks pretty interesting. I'll be curious how your field test goes. If that gets all your water weight to ride well on your hips without causing stomach issues, then it would be a nice investment. I've also been looking into the hydration vests as well, but I know you feel the weight more when it's up on your shoulders.

Thanks again for the great podcasts! Keep 'em coming!

Travis,

How about a FU50k Update to let everyone know how the run at Greenrock with the Inov-8 pack went?
